Too many fucking isms, no?
Well, no. Here’s an interesting essay on their relationship: https://danielmiessler.com/blog/difference-existentialism-nihilism-absurdism/
This is a fair description of where I am:
- Absurdism is the belief that a search for meaning is inherently in conflict with the actual lack of meaning, but that one should both accept this and simultaneously rebel against it by embracing what life has to offer.
My friend Jimmy’s mom, an older woman that reminded me of a geriatric version of Patsy from Absolutely Fabulous (but smart and kind) used to say that living well is the best revenge. I still can’t help but smile when I remember her raising her cocktail with the simple toast…
“L’revenge!”
Marsha wasn’t exactly an eccentric, but she was a New York original. She was purely Marsha and as genuine an adult as I’ve ever met. She was genuinely Marsha.
It’s taken me a little bit to understand what living well means. We can get into that another time, but it boiled down to being kind and finding the humor in everything. She would have told you that both are the greatest acts of rebellion. Being unkind and being miserable are often just the most definite signs of laziness.
Anyway, I’ve gone off on another tangent, but it’s a good article. Damn, I miss Marsha. I used to love running into that old bird when I was out walking.
