The United States of Dystopia – Argument of the Day

The dystopian future we imagine in literature and film isn’t the future at all, but a portrayal of a dystopian present. It exists in the spaces between what we focus our attention on to distract ourselves. When it appears in our art and entertainment it’s because someone has seen it in the corner of their eye and recorded it. It is, in fact, the day to day reality for many people around the world. The reason dystopian science fiction and “futuristic” art resonates with so many people is that it pings a part of our brains that have recorded it on a subconscious level but suppressed it.
