If memory serves, and it could be verified certainly, this is the 2nd 2020 release from Ukraine’s MORWAN, and it’s fire! Or what do they say in Ukraine? It’s Chernobyl? Okay corny but it’s deadly hot, post-punk, cold wave along the lines of Killing Joke, or darker era Depeche Mode. The language barrier is there, sure, but it doesn’t seem to matter. It’s a wicked mash-up of Slavic cold wave and Middle Eastern vibes… think maybe The Cure also. It works.
Reviews are not my thing anyway. Analysis takes the power away from the music. This is just a chronicle of stuff that’s out there. This hasn’t been out there long. It was only just released on the 20th of this month. It’s brand fucking new. I am going to have to go back into my own archives. Maybe the earlier posting was an EP?
There’s not a lot to say right now headed into a long weekend. I’m not feeling anything but the music. That’s all that matters anyway. The rest is just feelings and those seem to be dulled near to the point of extinction this morning. They always come back tenfold too so while not quite a calm before the storm it’s a welcome respite.
I’m still mulling over some reactions to a Werner Herzog quote I threw up on social media a couple days ago, about the mean, base nature of The Universe. People see any appraisal of the natural world outside the fantasies of a cosmic unicorn fairyland as “choosing negativity.” It’s really just an observation for me and without any judgment as either positive or negative. It’s like calling a shoe a shoe is negative? Or is it a shoe? We can imbue a shoe with all kinds of positive qualities and it’s still a shoe. It’s a shoe that we will wear down to trash on the concrete and gravel despite any observations of its beauty and design. It’s all the same is what I’m saying. There is indeed staggering beauty in The Universe and by and large it is still uncaring and chaotic and a right bastard that will kill you.
This other Herzog quote made me chuckle as well:
“Look into the eyes of a chicken and you will see real stupidity. It is a kind of bottomless stupidity, a fiendish stupidity. They are the most horrifying, cannibalistic and nightmarish creatures in the world.”
― Werner Herzog
Having raised chickens I can tell you that it is 100% true. They are horrible bastards. Who will come to the defense of a chicken?
