Karlheinz Stockhausen for Breakfast

A few of the comments on this (if you go to the Youtube post to listen) are precious. I’m a little disappointed that I didn’t think of them.

I’m a fan, and you may find this as beautiful as I find it, if you also find music and poetry in giant buildings being demolished, or love the sound of the express train rattling by underground while you’re waiting on the local platform. Is this an endorsement?

Absolutely.

This is some dark shit. It makes death metal sound like k-pop.

I’m not a musician, nor a musical scholar nor historian. Is this religious music? I don’t know, but it seems a sort of counterpoint, if unintentional, to Bach’s cantatas. It’s an exploration of The Other, certainly. Western Culture has spent an inordinate amount of time studying and celebrating the lighter side of our faith while acting out a darker side that tells us our faith justifies our horrible actions. Luzifer’s Abschied doesn’t seem like a celebration or an act of worship though. It’s more a portrayal of Hell itself, whether it’s meant as a dire warning or merely a tonal exercise. I don’t know. It’s moving though. It goes places where most prefer not to go. It’s the musical equivalent of Hieronymous Bosch. It’s fucking scary.

Luzifer’s Abschied – Lucifer’s Farewell, I’m going to have to read the source material on this. Is this is farewell to Heaven from which he was banished, or his farewell to Earth? Not sure. I’ll have to find out.

Appendix: so this piece is actually part of a 29 hour opera cycle, as in HOLY SHIT that’s a lot of Lucifer!
