Gary Numan was written off by many as a novelty act with Cars hitting the charts but he really did nail something bigger… some post-industrial, early information age nightmare. The Matrix, as it were, was just beginning to envelop us. We were partially aware. Prophets of Doom cried danger. Others embraced it. Integrated it. Kind of a new androidism, or a portrayal of androidism really. The emotions are all really human. The fear smells like sweat and chemicals. He didn’t paint it as an electric dream state but an awakening.
None of it sounds dated to me, but maybe I just don’t want it to be so it doesn’t? It’s very present to me, halogen lit and on the edge of veins and circuits. Somewhere in the transition and fully bloody aware it’s happening.
