This is the key scene from The Matrix. This is the conscious choice to stay in The Matrix or to pursue The Truth. It’s the red pill/blue pill business that people from all over the political spectrum have decided speaks to their “cause.” Red State, Blue State, Deep State or The Matrix, you can take from it whatever suits your fancy. You’ll be hard pressed to convince me that it has anything to do with politics and particularly American politics.
It is about the desire for Truth. It is about pursuing The Truth, or the choice between happy oblivion and being “woke.” And while I’m certain the state of “woke” actually exists, I will continue to argue that among the people who might describe themselves as such, whether the left or the conspiracy-minded alt-right, Q-Anon sorts, only a small few are truly woke. They’ve simply chosen a different game-path from a pre-programmed drop-down menu. They’re walloping through a corner of The Matrix like in a game of Evil Dead, blasting Zombies and reloading and blasting more and feeling all special about themselves.
They are, to be fair, seeing the glitches in The Matrix and that’s all well and good but that doesn’t mean that they’re close to Truth. No more so in fact than primitive Man explaining away thunder and lightning as angry gods. They’re creating their own mythology or writing new code in an open-source gaming system.
Moving forward I’m going to be taking notes on two things. The first is a simple fallacy in the film itself, something they get wrong or just fail to account for in regard to humans and human nature. The second will be the definition of “woke” and why woke isn’t woke at all but often re-written mythology.
And don’t get me wrong, because on a basic level The Matrix in concept is a very important film in that it introduces the idea of the corruptive power of Consensus or rather how Consensus perverts Truth. Also, I’m neither claiming to be possessed of some higher knowledge, nor claiming to be truly woke. I’m just saying that there is a need to adjust some definitions: woke, consciousness, truth, truth vs. consensus, and morality, both universal and relative.
In other words, I’m just sayin’. We see what we prefer to see and the whole idea of The Red Pill is a lot more frightening than many people could conceive, or actually want to experience. It would be a lot more disruptive than perhaps even the most moral of us would choose for themselves let alone for everyone else. It’s only at that point that anything in The Matrix (the film) can be considered political.
So…
- What is woke?
- Who is woke?
- Who really wants to be woke?
- Why you may not really want to be woke?
- What is the Matrix?
- What character in The Matrix do you relate to?
- What character in The Matrix are you really?
- Who is the real hero in The Matrix?
- Finally, where and why The Matrix failed.
These are just going to be thought bubbles really, interspersed with my other random nonsense, because I have the attention span of a gnat and a busy life. It doesn’t escape me either that it may be too ambitious an undertaking to really give these the attention they merit.
