World War III Radio: Yoruba Singers – Ojinga’s Own (Soundways 2023)

A bit of a change of pace for this space, maybe. Maybe it’s in order. Something a bit more organic sounding. Less electronics, and more of the Earth at least. I need a reminder from time to time that the rest of the world is out there. Different sounds. Different voices. Different faces. This isn’t really their war. We just inflict it on them, and still they make songs. Something to be said for the persistance of the human spirit.

I’d kind of forgotten about Soundways Records. There was a while there when they were my primary source of new music. They seemed to be trying harder than anyone else to explore different sounds and vibes. They weren’t just taking other peoples’ sounds and watering them down for white tastes either. It was more a transfer from place to place. Pick it up there and put it down here. Cultural transfer, rather than cultural appropriation, or that’s how it comes off to me. Not everything is the spoils of war. Soundways always seemed pure of intent to me. I appreciate that.

I’m growing weary of the war. From quarantine to war with very little space in between. I’m tired. I’ll just leave that there. Not a lot more to say about it, except that it doesn’t feel sustainable. I’m just tired all the time.

This album helps.
