You’re not lonely: Appendix

This video is a sort of appendix to my argument from yesterday, on dependency, connectivity, and loneliness. As a sidenote to this, the artwork used in this video is stunning and perfect.

My sidenote to this video, is know the difference between solitude and isolation. They aren’t the same at all.

Human beings are hardwired for socialization and connectivity. That’s not even an argument. Similar to other “isms” (a term used in 12 steps programs, an ism is an unhealthy manifestation of an otherwise natural drive or instinct), the drive can be warped and perverted beyond any usefulness and leave us in a state of anxiety that demands soothing. We lose ourselves in chasing a balm, or self-medication. Whether it’s an alcoholic solution or digital, it gets in the way of what we seek to soothe and worsens our condition.

I am also putting this video out there to open the door to further exploration, and that is as the video suggests, a journey into the benefits of solitude. Not isolation, as I’ve been accused of (and that may have been accurate at different points in my past), but solitude. There are elements in this video though that are germain to my previous argument. We are social beings. We require connection as readily as we require air and food. We just may not need as much as we are chasing.
