COVID-19, part 22

Spring came in yesterday with very little fanfare. There were no flower shows, nor any sales, nor any talk of planting. The only business-as-usual tasks were the usual business of managing anxiety. What more is there to say about any of it?

St. Patrick’s Day was cancelled except in name. There were kelly green outfits in the windows of a costumer around the way on Fort Hamilton but it didn’t seem to me that anyone was stopping to look at store windows. Mortality seems to negate the question of whether to drink oneself into a stupor. It’s all rather…

Something.

I’m set up here with two laptops and all phones diverted to home. I spent hours yesterday on the phone trying to sell the idea of just sitting tight and being patient. It was hard to settle in last night and just relax. Exhaustion is curious that way. You can sleep but it’s not real sleep. It’s just kind of passing out. I’ve a lot of experience just passing out.

Blah.

For now…

Updates per 9pm: The governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, signed an order today that as of Sunday night will shut down all non-essential businesses in the state. Everyone who can work from home, of course, will remain working until notified otherwise but this is simply fucking devastating for a lot of others. I’ve already spoken to friends and neighbors who are being furloughed until further notice. Just for the record, this is a general list of essential and non-essential businesses:

It’s safe to say that a lot of people are simply proper fucked. There have also been state and local bills signed that will defer (but not cancel) things like mortgage payments for 90s days. It’s helpful but doesn’t do a lot to help anyone catch up.

Troubled times…
