That there are so many wonderful covers of Van Morrison’s songs is the true testimonial to the magnificence of his songwriting. His own originals are damn near perfect that I would normally recommend that anyone taking a stab at it switch shit up and make it their own. The Waterboys’ cover of Sweet Thing, from Fisherman’s Blues, is very true to the original recording though but it lacks nothing. I can’t think of a better love song and Michael Scott’s vocals just twist up my heart. He comes up deep from the center of the emotional core and pulls all the Wordsworth-ish pastoral imagery back in for a sort of implosion. It’s a song that demands a lover to play it for.
