I don’t know, man. Were I pressed for words I’d say that Disko Telegraf is what hashish would sound like if smoking hashish sounded like anything. It just kind of pushes along, all steady and easy. It’s a journey. It’s a ride. You don’t so much listen to Balkan Taksim as go along for the ride. You’re a passenger.
It’s that sort of vibe. Don’t get it twisted. You’re not vibing. The tunes are vibing you.
I don’t know a damn thing about Bucharest, Romania. I can’t say that I’ve ever even met someone from there. In that respect it’s as real a place as Oz or Narnia. I just have to go on trust that it’s actually there. Somewhere out there, maybe east of Germany. Sadly, I don’t think I could point to it on a map. How ridiculous of me…
We’re about to collapse into another heat wave here in the Northeast. And why mention the weather at all, but again and again and again, as Ian Rankin said about Scotland, when you write a story about New York City you really have to write in the weather as a major player in the story. As the wind and cold rain are their own character in Edinburgh in a Rankin book, the summer heat is the criminal overlord in a New York Tale. It presides over anything else that might be happening at any given moment. We’ve had mornings recently where it was 85 fahrenheit at 5am. You wake up and it’s hanging over you and it will remain there for the entire day and into the next night. It’s always right there pushing down on you. It’s The Summoner. It’s calling you down.
So yes, I will mention it if that’s what’s happening. You get news of a heatwave coming and you sit there waiting the way you might wait for the cops to break down your door. It’s got gravity. News of a heatwave brings dread and horror.
It’s coming. You are standing right in the path of something bad.
And I’m going to leave you with that. You’re going to deal with it however you deal with bad news. I’m going to take care of my own and we’ll see how it all pans out and where we’re at when it clears out on the other side and stomps back to hell or wherever it came from.
