The comparisons are going to be there. You could put SOVIET SOVIET anywhere along the post-punk timeline from 1978 to 1985 and not have any idea at all that this album is only 4 years old. I don’t know where the fuck I was in November of 2016 but let’s say I was distracted. The unthinkable happened. We had just elected the weirdest ass hat in the world as the leader of the most powerful country in the world… and there were other diversions. Post-punk bands from Italy just weren’t on my radar. My loss.
I don’t buy a lot of new[er} music on CD or LP anymore. It happens but it’s rare. I think it was Leon Bridges on LP last year, and both Zeal & Ardor albums earlier this year. Some other older stuff and compilations of the arcane and/or exotic. I heard Endless for the first time today and bought it on CD after the first listen. It was a transporting experience for me. All of a sudden it was autumn of 1985 again, for better or for worse. I’d like to say the music is the only similarity but let’s not get into that now. It wasn’t all bad back then. As a matter of fact, the music was fucking amazing.
There is so much to say, but I’m tired at the moment and will probably sleep, but Soviet Soviet made me happy, so there is that…
And why not throw in another album while it’s still posted. It’s called Nice:
